And the winners are…

The games were submitted, the judges judged and the results were announced a few minutes ago.

First the category awards:

  • For Best Art, Black Banshee from Huddersfield
  • For Innovation, Plan B from Derby
  • For Best Audio, BUGS from Brunel Uni
  • For Best Cheeky Reuse of Stuff, Sanguine Labs from Bournemouth
  • For Lateness, the Brofessionals from Bath
  • For Good Intentions, i++; from Aberystwyth

Video footage explaining what those categories actually mean will follow later.

Now the winners in reverse order.

  • 3rd place goes to Need More Big Bears from Teeside
  • 2nd place goes to DevSoc from Nottingham Trent Uni
  • and 1st place goes to the quite wonderful DOT game by Fishtank from Aberystwyth.

Again, video footage to follow.

Thanks to all the teams for their absurd levels of work and commitment, to the judges, our hosts at BCU and everyone else. It’s been real.

Overnight Twitter

Your intrepid social reporter wasn’t intrepid enough to be on the overnight shift so has been reduced to scouring Twitter to see what happened. Here’s a snapshot:

11am Survey

At 5pm yesterday I took a quick snapshot of the mood in this video. Then everyone was freshfaced and raring to go. How does it compare to 19 hours later?

Still four hours to go…

GameCamp, now with added FunFair

Not only do the coders have to cope with time limits and dangerous blood-sugar levels, they also had the distraction of a funfair outside on Saturday evening. Shiny lights… Ooh, pretty shiny flashing lights…

Funfair

Thankfully it’s not on all night or we might have found half the room glued to the windows like zombified acid casualties…

Mentor Interviews

We’ve got professionals from the games industry acting as mentors for the teams during the GameCamp. We grabbed four of the on Saturday evening for a quick update.

Neil Holmes from Blitz Studios:

Guy Wilday, games consultant:

James Rogers from Microsoft Games Studios:

And last but most certainly not least, Andrew Fray from Codemasters does battle with the lift. Why the interview is being done in the lift is anyone’s guess.

From the Twitter

A few tweets from the #x48 hashtag that caught my eye and I felt deserved being blogged completely out of context. If you think this sort of thing is fun-fun-fun get over to Twitter search. Oh yes!

Currently in the lead on for most arsey tweeting is SinEstelle from Derby. Can anyone beat her/him?

A 5pm Survey

They’ve been at it for 4 hours. Tempers aren’t frayed, fights haven’t broken out, heads haven’t been banged on tables. They are, however, a little sick of the likes of me sticking cameras in their faces (my vox-pops are being added to the Vimeo group and the Microsofties will be editing theirs over the weekend) so I just did an ambient survey over some shoulders.

It’ll be interesting to compare this with tomorrow afternoon…

Mayor of Nerdcore

Birmingham’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Michael Wilkes, dropped in for a visit and revealed himself to be genuinely interested in what was going on having been a programmer in the 70s. Here’s a bit of footage of Toby Barnes explaining the whole GameCamp concept to him and the Lady Mayor.

The mayor promises to mention X48 on his blog later on tonight.
